How to Say Good Evening In Bahasa Indonesia

Halo, apa kabar? Ketemu lagi sama saya, Iman Prabawa. This time we're gonna learn how to say good evening in Bahasa Indonesia. We will also be going to watch scenes that I took from movies so that you can see how Indonesian people are saying this phrase.

How to Say Good Evening In Bahasa Indonesia

If you want to ask me about a specific topic or have difficulties with something in the Indonesian language, you can just ask me. You can check it out on the About Me page how you can ask me.

Okay, then. Let's get started.

Good Evening In Bahasa Indonesia

Good evening in Bahasa Indonesia is [selamat malam]. [Selamat malam] is spoken in the nighttime. In English, there are good evening and good night. In Bahasa Indonesia, it is only one, that is selamat malam.

How to Pronounce Selamat Malam

This is the full phrase, and you pronounce this phrase like this below. I have recorded my voice saying this phrase.

But you can say it just one half of it, that is "malam." And below is how you pronounce the word.

As I have explained in my previous articles, How to Say Good Morning and How to Say Good Afternoon, if we translate this word for word, then the translation would be,
To congratulate night.
I think it's kind of weird if we translate this phrase word for word, and it doesn't make any sense. But right now, let's watch a scene from a movie where this phrase is being spoken.

Examples of Selamat Malam In Use

In this section, we will watch examples from movies, youtube videos, and whatnot where this phrase [selamat malam] is spoken.

The first clip we are about to watch is taken from a TV Series called Tetangga Masa Gitu.

As you can see from the scene above, the phrase is being spoken in a full phrase.

The second clip is taken from a TV Series called Mimpi Metropolitan. In this scene, the phrase is being spoken half of it, that's "malam."

The conversation in the scene with English subtitles is as follows.

Bambang: Mba Melanie. Malam, mba Melanie. (Melanie. Evening, Melanie.)

Melanie: Malam, Bang. Belum tidur? (Evening, Bang. Haven't you slept yet?)

Bambang: Belum, mba. (No, not yet.)

You can choose whether to say in the full phrase "selamat malam" or just "malam." If the situation is really formal, you better say in the full sentence, "selamat malam."

The third clip is taken from Ini Talk Show, a popular TV program in Indonesia.

In this clip, this is what he said,
Andre: Ya! Selamat malam, pemirsa. Di mana pun Anda berada. (Well, good evening, everyone. Where ever you are.)
As you can see, he said it in a full phrase [selamat malam].

The fourth clip is taken from a movie called Sin (2019).

In this clip, he said good evening in Bahasa Indonesia in its full phrase [selamat malam].

So, I think this will wrap up for this article, but if I find any examples, Insha Allah, I will update this article again.

Thank you for reading this article, and I'll see you soon. Bye now.
