Halo semuanya, ketemu lagi sama aye, Iman Prabawa. In this article, I want to talk to you about the meaning of the word [lho] in Indonesian. As always, we will look at examples from YouTube videos, movies, comics, and others where Indonesians use the word.
If you have any questions regarding the Indonesian language, you can ask me directly. You can see how to do that on my About Me page.
If you are a beginner in the Indonesian language, you can learn step by step with My Lesson Here.
So now, let's dive in!
Lho In Indonesian
You will see it is written as [lho] or as [loh]. Both are the same and has the same meaning.
[Lho] or [loh] can be used such as:
1. To emphasize something. Here, [lho] doesn't mean anything in a sentence, but it gives emotions to the sentence. If you erase it, the meaning of the sentence doesn't change, but the natural feel is like disappearing.
Example sentences:
1. Dari semua kandidat itu yang tahu jawabannya cuma kamu, lho. Hebat! (Of all the candidates, only you know the answer. Great job!)
2. Cara ngerjainnya itu kaya gini, lho. (This is how you do it.)
2. To express surprise because something is not as you imagined it would be.
Example sentences:
1. A: Lho? Kok loe masih di rumah sih? Bukannya loe bilang tadi loe ada kuliah? (Whoa? Why are you still at home? Didn't you say that you have a lecture to attend?)
B: Gue dapet kabar dosennya ngga masuk. Ya udah, gue ngga jadi berangkat deh. (My friend just told me that the lecturer couldn't give a lecture. So, I didn't go.)
How to Pronounce Lho
This is how you pronounce [lho] in Bahasa Indonesia.
Next, we will look at examples where Indonesians use the word [lho].
Example of Lho In Use
The first example we are going to watch is taken from Maudy Ayunda's YouTube Channel. Let's watch the clip below.
Below is what she says in the clip above with English translations.
Maudy Ayunda: Kalian tahu ngga? Dari seratus sembilan puluh lima negara di dunia ini. Cuman sembilan belas negara, lho. Yang dipimpin oleh perempuan. (Did you know? Of the 195 countries in the world, only 19 are led by women.)
[Lho] in this clip is used to emphasize, so it refers to the first use of [lho] that I explained above.
Vocabulary From the Clip
[Kalian] = you all.
[Tahu] = [tau] = know.
[Cuman] is the conversational way of saying [hanya] = only.
The second example is taken from a TV serial, Di Bulan Suci Ini..., Season 1, Episode 1 (2023). Let's watch the clip below.
For the conversation in the clip with English translations and vocabulary explanations, you can read it in my article here, Nih In Indonesian.
[Loh] in this clip refers to the second meaning that I explained above. Here, Bu Cil is talking to Ajeng's mom, and then she gives the phone to Ajeng because her mom wants to speak to her. But then Bu Cil is surprised, knowing that Ajeng doesn't want to talk to her mom and just turns the phone instead.

That's all for this article. If I find another example, Insha Allah, I will update this article again. Thank you for reading my article. Stay tuned for more updates, and I'll see you soon. Buh-bye.
